How to Become a Learning Experience Designer

Most learning experience designers come from a background in education or education technology, although there are others who take a more non-traditional approach. It’s possible to get into learning experience design by having an educational background or by earning a learning experience design certificate or degree.

The vast majority of LX designers have a college or master’s degree. Many universities now also offer learning experience design degrees for those who know that they want to pursue a career in this specialized field. Most LX designers tend to have a degree in fields like education, educational technology, instructional design, or user design. Of course, there are still major differences between learning experience design vs. instructional design. 

Alternatively, some LX designers have backgrounds in related fields like instructional design. While LXD is emerging, instructional design has existed for decades. Instructional design, or ID, first began to help train thousands of soldiers during World War II. Now, instructional designers help to design learning experiences that might be online or offline. However, learning experience designers are different because they focus on the learners more than the content. In other words, LX designers focus on the entire experience, while ID professionals focus more on the content. 

Many LXD professionals advance because they are able to create different learning experiences for specific organizations. LX designers should be able to understand the learner, their industry, why they’re learning specific skills, and design learning experiences to improve those outcomes significantly.
