A good learning experience should also take different mediums into account. Kolb’s four stages of learning include concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation.

The concrete experience stage relies more on the feelings and emotions of the learner, which is central to a positive learning experience. The reflective observation stage is where the learner considers different points of view and makes specific observations about the experience. 

In the abstract conceptualization stage, the learner develops theories and frameworks to solve specific problems. The last stage, the active experimentation stage, focuses on the learner taking a practical approach to discover methods and strategies that work in the real world.

Ultimately, a good learning experience is focused on being effective and engaging, which is the true goal of any learning experience. Next, a good learning experience adds value to the learner and promotes further learning. 

A good learning experience also recognizes that the brain has limited processing power and that cognitive overload is possible if a learning experience isn’t manageable. An LX designer might go through an existing online course and edit or trim it down to be more cohesive and focus on only the most necessary information.

Gamification will also be critical to the growth of learning experience design. With billions of gamers worldwide, gamification is a way for learners to remain motivated and engaged. In fact, 74% of teachers have digital game-based learning to enhance their lessons.

What Are Examples of Learning Experiences?

There are countless examples of learning experiences since they can be characterized as any human experience where someone “learns.” A learning experience can be a conversation, a field trip, a simulation, or an internship.

A training program is an obvious example of a learning experience, with the goal being that employees are properly trained according to specific goals and metrics. Learning experiences are also accessible and inclusive since their main goal is to help the learner gain relevant knowledge and/or skills.

Many learning experiences might be a bit more abstract, with the goal of adding communication or collaboration skills to the learners’ skillset. Learners might travel, participate in community service, or attend a webinar to develop specific skills that can’t be quantified as easily.

A group discussion or debate is a great example of a learning experience where learners can share knowledge, compare different perspectives, and debate specific topics to understand the material more deeply. Of course, the discussions should remain positive, constructive, and encouraging.

Learning experiences are also often multimedia experiences, incorporating different formats like video, audio, text, and more. Visual elements are critical since visuals can help with learner engagement and learner retention. The right multimedia might depend on the specific learner demographic, their goals, and how interactivity ties into the overall learner experience. A good learning experience designer understands what formats to use and why to use them. 

A traditional classroom experience is a learning experience, but online courses are also learning experiences. Similarly, a group project is also a group learning experience that can encourage collaboration and cooperation. A virtual lab is a learning experience where learners can practice skills or conduct experiments. 

Mobile learning is also a massive sector that will only continue to grow thanks to the rise of smartphones. The mobile learning sector could reach $80.1 billion by 2027, and mobile learning experiences also gained significant traction during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

An augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) simulation is also a learning experience. These technologies can also play a critical role in the LX sector over the next several years and decades.
