Learning experience design (LXD) is a discipline that integrates principles from instructional design, user experience design, and educational technology to create compelling and effective learning experiences. It’s considered a new design field that emerged within the past several decades, as the term was originally coined in 2007.

But how exactly should you be thinking about LXD? Let’s examine what makes these specific experiences unique, and also delve into some examples of learning design that can help you understand the field, why it’s essential, and what learning experience designers hope to accomplish.

What Are the Characteristics of Learning Design?

We know that learning expereince design is a field meant to create engaging and transformative learning experiences. But what exactly does that mean? Specifically, what are characteristics of learning experiences that you cover in learning experience design courses or once you obtain a learning experience design certificate?

Learning Experience Design Characteristic 1

One principle to remember when thinking about a learning experience design is to make the experience as accessible as possible. This means the educational experience should be inclusive and cater to individuals with different levels of experience, preferences, and backgrounds. Whether you learn from a top university or a learning experience design free course, this kind of inclusivity is critical to LXD as a whole.

Learning Experience Design Characteristic 2

Another characteristic of learning design is that it improves based on feedback. In this way, LXD is always an evolving process, because LX designers should continue to improve and iterate the experience based on the feedback received. After all, learning is never static, so improving the learning experience should always be considered. For example, at Jackrabbit LX, this idea is demonstrated in the prototype stage of our five step learning design process.

Learning Experience Design Characteristic 3

A third characteristic of successful learning experience design is that it is collaborative. Most learning experience design courses recognize that LXD is about thinking about various collaborators, which could include clients, subject matter experts (SMEs), and other stakeholders. Oftentimes, LXD occurs in a team environment and includes the likes of project managers, learning experience designers, technical engineers, SMES, videographers, and more.

Learning Experience Examples

What exactly does it mean to begin thinking about learning experiences, and what is a learning experience to begin with? A learning experience refers to any experience that provides all the necessary components to allow a person, organization, or system to transform.

It can even take place outside of the real world. For example, a learning experience could take place in a virtual environment thanks to virtual reality and augmented reality technologies.

There’s also no question that artificial intelligence is one of the most innovative and game-changing emerging technologies. With the rise of tools like ChatGPT, we may see that LX designers begin leveraging both AI and machine learning to personalize learning experiences in a unique way that was previously impossible.

This could include using AI to determine what specific content might be best suited for a particular student’s learning style, or artificial intelligence could also power interactive simulations that can help individuals learn specific skills in a controlled environment.

What’s another aspect to remember when designing learning experiences for students? Make sure that the skills and knowledge are applicable in the real world. More and more, LX designers are figuring out ways to make sure that learning is a more hands-on experience that leads to real-world success.

Real-World Example of LXD

In case you’re still wondering about learning experience examples, consider this real Jackrabbit LX example. We collaborated with a major social media network to create highly customized and branded marketing courses.

Going into this project, the challenge was to stay on brand for the client while, at the same time, implementing best practices in learning and development design — including robust LMS capabilities.

To help meet this challenge, we focused on transferring the brand’s video-focused format into every course and used a more casual and fun tone that fit the brand’s audience (using emojis, for example). At the same time, we also leveraged customized versions of the Docebo learning management system to ensure each course used best practices.

One example of this involved using gamification techniques informed by behavior science to reward participants for completing sections of the course. This also encouraged them to proceed to the next section. Additionally, we created original video content based on scripts written with best practices in mind.

Altogether, this resulted in a set of courses that kept the brand’s lighthearted look and feel while simultaeously offering an effective learning experience that empowered learner success.

As demonstrated in that example above, in LXD, designers have to think about using as many different formats and elements as possible to make sure that the learning experience is empathetic and accessible. The layout of the learning experience should be clean and intuitive, but the wireframes should also be flexible enough to adapt without being too costly.

This is another underrated characteristic of learning experience designs: the adaptability of these experiences could be quite critical to specific organizations and use cases.

At this point, you may be curious – how do I become a learning experience designer? The fact of the matter is people arrive at LXD in many different ways, from previous education-realted careers to on-the-job introductions to learning design.
