The learning experience design (LXD) field has emerged over the past several decades, but what does it mean to design a learning experience? A learning experience can range from a conversation to an interactive dashboard, to a webinar or group discussion. 

LXD combines elements of UX design, education technology, psychology, and cognitive science, and can include other disciplines. LX designers are focused on ensuring learner experiences are engaging instead of boring, and motivating instead of monotonous. 

What Is a Learning Experience Designer?

A learning experience designer’s main job is to focus that the educational or training program in place focuses on the learner, their needs, and motivations. Simply put, A learning experience designer is a creative professional who uses design skills, methods, and tools to design learning experiences. A learning experience can be any range of experiences where human beings can learn new skills or knowledge. 

These LX designers have been critical in developing programs for K-12 schools, universities, nonprofits, healthcare facilities, and government agencies. As a result, a learning experience designer job description can look different from organization to organization. 

A designer will think about the technology and multimedia that will be utilized in a learning experience. LXD professionals should also strive to make the learning experience more authentic or measurable from a success standpoint. Many learning experience design jobs are about making educational content more inclusive and accessible, while other roles may focus on leveraging research to improve how employees are trained. 

An organization can benefit from improving its onboarding experience, and LX designers can be critical in that redesign. This can prove significant for more competitive industries since companies that have a poor onboarding experience are twice as likely to experience higher employee turnover rates. 

An LXD professional at a nonprofit may improve how it onboards or trains new employees. Similarly, An LX designer might improve a diversity program by helping learners challenge their assumptions or biases. LXD professionals do need both project management and communication skills to stay on point with respect to learning experience projects. 

What Are Some Learning Experience Design Principles? 

One major principle is the concept of micro-learning. Micro-learning involves brief educational experiences that focus on a narrow or slim concept, or idea. Many LX designers are turning to microlearning because it is 17% more effective than traditional learning experiences.  

Microlearning can occur in different formats, but it will always be short content. Microlearning content can include text, graphics, videos, audio, tests, quizzes, or animations. The benefits of micro-learning are often that they are cost-effective, faster to deliver, and can boost knowledge retention.

Another main LXD principle is to keep the content entertaining or engaging. For some training or educational programs, this might involve injecting some humor or interesting illustrations into instructional modules to keep students or employees engaged.

It’s also important for LX designers to think about measurable goals as they begin to improve and iterate upon their learning experience. Without this framework, then they can start to lose focus of the overall goals of the design, which can lead to a deteriorating learning experience. Anyone with a learning experience design certificate should understand this basic principle, as well. 

An organization might begin implementing scenario-based learning environments, where learners get a safe space to develop new skills. Virtual reality simulations might also improve learning experiences for technical jobs such as automotive safety or healthcare facility roles.

This also means including the learners in the creation of their own learning experience and process. What’s more, it gives them the opportunity to reflect on their own cognition and make choices to empower their learning throughout the experience. 
  4. Providing continuous feedback and opportunity for reflection to provide the learner with clear understanding of how they are progressing and what they need to do to continue learning effectively. This feedback also works to improve their metaconginition, mindset, and their content and skills. 
  5. Creating productive tension in the “Goldilocks” zone between difficult and easy. This challenges the learner in a way that generates motivation to succeed.

When considering learning experience design principles, it’s important to note, there is a significant difference between learning experience design vs instructional design. Instructional Design, or ID, focuses on designing the most effective educational or instructional materials, while LXD focuses on creating an experience for the learner that motivates and engages them.
