While learning experience design, or LXD, is a constantly evolving field, there are many questions about what it takes to be an LXD professional. What exactly does it entail, and what should LX designers be thinking about when designing these experiences?

Here, we examine the steps to consider when it comes to designing learning experiences.

What Is Learning Experience Design?

Learning experience design is an interdisciplinary field focusing on making learning experiences more human-centered and goal-oriented. It incorporates psychology, cognitive psychology, instructional design, user experience design, and more. Learning Experience Design, or LXD, professionals might work in a variety of settings including at a university, nonprofit, or government agency.

LXD harnesses a mix of creativity and research when designing and improving learning experiences. The field also focuses on making sure that a learning experience is enjoyable, relevant to their real-world goals, and has measurable key metrics and KPIs to help determine the success of a learning experience.

Some learning experience design examples include a conversation, presentation, or an online course. When designing learning experiences for students, LX designers must consider things like accessibility, inclusivity, and empathy.

LXD professionals can help organizations in various ways. Some of them can help organizations more deeply understand their employees or target demographic, while other LX designers may help use feedback to improve productivity, sales, or engagement. Whether the goal is to improve how employees collaborate or how salespeople speak to customers, the right learning experience can be nothing less than transformative.

What Are the Steps of Learning Experience Design?

Jackrabbit LX firmly believe that the first goal of designing a learning experience is to truly meet the learner where they are. This might include meeting them with respect to a specific skill set or considering the learner’s resources when designing a learning experience.

The second step is to make the knowledge/skills as applicable as possible. In other words, the learner should understand that learning these skills can lead to real-world success for them. It also may resonate with them in either a personal or professional way.

One of the most important LX principles is to make sure that the learning experience is “active.” LX designers should be in the business of creating more “lean in” interactive learning experiences than passive “lean back” experiences and give learners opportunities for metacognition and making choices during the experience.

This brings us to the fourth principle of LX design: designing a way for learners to understand their progress through ever-present feedback. This feedback can also further improve the learning experience and future iterations. The most effective and engaging learning experiences can create more personalized feedback. 65% of employees, by the way, say that they want more feedback.

The final principle is to create “productive tension.” The learning experience has to exist in a particular setting where it cannot be too easy that it is not challenging. Still, it cannot be too difficult. LX designers should be able to design within these specific constraints to create the most motivating and engaging learning experience possible.

Learning experience designers must also communicate with stakeholders while designing or improving learning experiences, so the ability to collaborate is critical to achieving LXD success. It’s also important for LX designers to have project management skills to ensure that projects are progressing on time and on budget. These stakeholders could be university administration, corporate executives, or government officials, depending on the LX role.

We believe these elements of learning experience design process are critical in creating and improving learning experiences. Whether your organization is trying to create a learning experience from the ground up, pivot an existing program, or revamp an online course, our professionals are happy to guide you through the process.
