What Are the Basic Principles of Learning Experience Design?

There are many learning experience design principles to think about, but one of the central principles is to understand the learner deeply. The focus may encompass learners’ emotions, circumstances, or deeper motivations to create the best experience possible.

The basic principles of LX design cannot be reduced to 3 or 4 principles, but there are a handful of critical principles to think about. Aside from fully understanding the learner, an LXD professional must empathize with the learner and use feedback to improve the experience. This feedback doesn’t just include learner feedback, but stakeholder feedback, as well.

It’s also vital for learning experience designers to make sure that the knowledge and skills are as immediately applicable as possible. If the learners don’t understand WHY they’re learning something or taking a course, it will affect how they remain motivated and retain the knowledge. If they understand why they’re learning skills, they can feel more purposeful about the experience. It can change how they think about basic principles of learning and its implications.

Lastly, the learning experience has to meet a specific “learning” zone. This learning zone refers to the fact that an experience cannot be so easy that it becomes boring or too complicated that it becomes frustrating. This “Goldilocks” zone is where the most engaging learning experiences exist. 

It’s also critical that learners remain active. This might include using interactive technology like AR/VR technology when necessary or using group discussions, debates, or quizzes to ensure learners aren’t passively absorbing information. Instead, learners can experiment with that knowledge and share it with others to further define their perspectives.  

What Are the Steps of Learning Experience Design?

At Jackrabbit LX, we believe in a 5-phase process for designing learning experiences. The first phase is the Discover phase, where we uncover everything necessary for the program’s success. This might include professionals with a learning experience certificate conducting extensive research on the learner, their motivations, skills, and past experiences. It will also factor in existing data about the program if the goal is to improve a specific learning experience.

The second phase is to Clarify, meaning that the work must be clarified in the form of deliverables that determine metrics and KPIs for success. This includes a Project Brief and Design document, a Core Evidence and Standards document, and a Project Roadmap outlining timelines, roles, and workflow. 

When we enter the Prototype phase, this includes the creation of a fully functional prototype to determine how the rest of the program or course will be created and scaled. When designing learning experiences for students, this phase can help with learner feedback before the learning experience is finalized. 

The Playbook phase is about recording everything we’ve learned in previous phases to enable us to begin creating the learning experience at scale. It includes the larger vision of the program while also describing every in-depth element of the experience. This stage is also critical for ensuring that the learning experience is consistent even as the team grows to build faster.

The Scale phase is the fifth and final phase, where our experts begin full production at scale. The experience is created, scaled, and measured during this stage according to the Evidence and Standards document. 

Professionals who take a learning experience design course and understand different learning experience design examples may be familiar with the LX process. It’s also important to remember the distinction between instructional design vs. learning experience design, as LXD focuses more on the learner than the educational content itself.
