2. Helping Everyday Heroes Grow Their Skills

A non-profit that helps people get better jobs faced a challenge: they needed to take their face-to-face training online without losing the personal touch. So, they spruced up a recorded web conference, making it look slick and professional but still natural and relatable. They made sure it was something that could be rolled out on a large scale, kind of like turning a home-cooked meal into a successful chain of restaurants.

3. From Medical Device Users to Masters

A company that makes medical devices had a task to teach patients how to use their products without an expert present to guide them. To do so, they created an online learning journey with videos featuring a charming actor and real-life employees. Imagine leveling up in a video game, but instead, you’re leveling up your career!

These examples show how LXD can take learning from a dull, forgettable process to a fun, engaging adventure that learners want to embark on. It’s a road trip through knowledge, and who wouldn’t prefer that over a boring straight drive?

What Are Three Modalities of Learning Experiences?

While there are many types of learning experiences, here are three types of learning experiences that the modern learning experience designer must consider: in-person, synchronous online, asynchronous, and blended. 

An in-person learning experience is what you might typically consider as a learning experience. These are your classroom or instruction room-centered experiences. ILT or instructor-led training can be used in both in-person and synchronous online learning. In these cases, one instructor leads an individual or group. Asynchronous online learning takes place at the discretion and pace of the learner, and it might include a course of pre-recorded modules. Blended learning blends both in-person learnings with online learning experiences.

The convenience and control of asynchronous learning can help learners reflect and apply their knowledge. There are also ways to collaborate with asynchronous learning through group discussions, projects, and cohorts. Asynchronous learning is worth considering, especially for professional learning and development, where 58% of employees prefer learning or training at their own speed.

Blended models can combine the best of these two worlds and ensure they leverage both benefits. For example, a synchronous session can set the tone for the next phase of the course, which can be asynchronous to help the learner move at their own pace. 

How Is Learning Experience Design Used In Creating a Curriculum?

There are many different examples of learning experiences in the classroom. A teacher giving a lecture is one example, but other learning experiences could include group activities, experiments, presentations, debates, and more. While these learning experiences examples are more common, the truth is that learning experiences can take many different forms.

With respect to universities and higher education, 5 examples of curriculum content and learning experiences could include:

  • Quizzes
  • Videos
  • Lectures
  • Group projects

Outside of a classroom or lecture hall, Imagine that you have a conversation with a friend where they tell you facts about a subject that you didn’t know before. Then, you decide to watch a Youtube video that tells you facts about a specific country, and you head to a pottery class where you craft a vase out of clay. While you might not consider it traditional learning, these are all learning experience examples. 

Just as it’s essential to know what makes a good learning experience, it’s also critical to understand bad learning experiences examples. A “bad” learning experience is poorly designed and one where the learner does not enjoy the experience, nor do they understand what or why they’re learning. It also might utilize elements that are not necessary or lead to cognitive overload, which can be discouraging and demotivating. Bad LXD also fails to include feedback as part of the process. It’s important for learners to be able to receive and give feedback so they can assess their progress and benefit from personalized instructions.  

It’s more important now to make sure that students engage with relevant content and that they understand WHY they’re learning about specific subjects. When learners contextualize this information, it helps spark intrinsic motivation. This is important because LXD emphasizes learning as a lifelong journey. With one in three employees claiming their training program is outdated, it’s clear that LXD can help organizations retain employees, which is critical to future success.
