We’re all used to a typical learning experience design in school. A teacher might give a lecture or read from a textbook, and learners are expected to follow along and absorb the information. Thanks to technology, learning experiences are changing to become more interactive and engaging than ever before.
Now, students have the convenience and flexibility to take online courses at their own pace and can access information from various devices. It’s easy to see how this changes the concept of education as a whole since now students can learn through 3-minute videos on their smartphone rather than sitting through a 1-hour lecture.
Students might engage in experiential learning. At a law school, this might look like a mock trial where students act as lawyers in a trial to learn more about what it’s actually like to make their arguments in court. It might also look like a month-long apprenticeship, where students learn relevant skills and knowledge that can help them decide whether a specific career is right for them. What Are the Three Types of Learning Experiences?
In the education field, there are 3 types of learning experiences that are widely known. They are:
- In-person learning: These learning experiences are also described as ILT or instructor-led training. This involves a learning experience where an instructor facilitates a training session for either a group or an individual.
- Asynchronous online learning: Learning that takes place at the pace and convenience of the learner, meaning they can access the content on their own schedule. This would involve learning experiences such as watching pre-recorded lectures, taking modules of an online course, or participating in an online debate of some kind.
- Blended learning: Blended learning involves the integration of in-person learning experiences with online learning experiences.
These types of learning experiences with examples have different functions and use cases. Some learners appreciate a webinar because it can hold their attention, while other employees might respond more to an interactive workshop. Still, others might learn the most from a group discussion or debate where they can reflect on their ideas and perspectives among others.
